Chapter 12

Kaleo

The sun beat down on us as Bessie and I worked in the lychee orchard, picking the sweet red fruits and dropping them into a big white bucket that was already half-full. Sweat trickled down my back. My arms ached from replacing two rotted fence posts earlier.

"The grounds are looking so much better since we started working on them," Bessie said, wiping her brow.

Her tank top clung to her chest. As usual, she was not wearing a bra and her nipples were clearly visible through the damp fabric. I'd gotten used to her dressing like this as we worked together, but the sight of her curvy body never failed to turn me on.

"We're tackling the easy fixes that don't cost much money," I noted. "It's a good way to start improving the estate."

Bessie peeled a lychee. The translucent white flesh glistened with juice. She held it up to my lips.

"Open up."

I let her place it on my tongue, the sweet tartness filling my mouth. I savored it before returning the favor, peeling one for her. She wrapped her lips around my fingers as she took it, sucking the juices.

My pulse quickened at her touch. The intense sexual tension had been building between us since we first met. I couldn't stop picturing how she had looked me over when she caught me naked.

"My grandmother's favorite drink was the lychee water I make," Bessie said. "I'll whip some up for Alana and Sam when they come up from surfing Shark Cove."

"It's delicious," I agreed, licking my sticky fingers. "Those girls. You know them well?"

"Not really. But my grandmother told me how much they helped out around here. She was very fond of them. That's why I let them come and go as they please."

"They seem like good kids."

"I saw you surfing with Alana this morning."

"Her surfing is crazy. She's an amazing talent."

"She really is. I don't know why she gave up competing."

"She said she just didn't enjoy it anymore."

"That seems like a valid reason."

"I agree."

"Do you think she's pretty?" Bessie casually asked.

I paused, sensing a test. Bessie was watching me closely.

I decided honesty was the best policy.

"Both Alana and Sam are very attractive young women."

A flicker of jealousy passed over Bessie's face, but she quickly composed herself.

"I'm thinking another fruit salad after dinner. Thoughts?"

"Dessert sounds good. But let's get those guavas first."

We walked through the orchard. Bessie pointed up at a cluster of ripe guavas hanging just out of reach.

"There, those are perfect. Plump and ready to burst with sweetness."

I looked around for the harvesting stick, but Bessie stopped me with a hand on my arm.

"No need. I have an idea. Kneel down, Kaleo."

Confused but intrigued, I dropped to my knees on the soft earth. Bessie moved behind me, resting her hands on top of my head.

"Time to put all those muscles to use," she said.

Before I knew what was happening, Bessie hiked up her skirt and climbed onto my shoulders in one graceful motion. I let out a surprised laugh as I felt her weight settle.
